In the Shakespearean tragedy ‘Macbeth’, Macbeth has to cope with strong feelings such as love, jealousy, ambition and hatred. I will illustrate how Macbeth deals with his feelings and how his character changes through this and the effect it has on the outcome of the play.

Macbeth has triumphed in battle then comes across three witches who predict what is going to happen. King Duncan gives Macbeth the title ‘The Thane of Cawdor’. Lady Macbeth receives great news that Duncan is staying with them, Macbeth gets his chance to brutally murder Duncan. He does this because he is jealous of the fact Duncan is King and he is not. Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth because he has his doubts. The news of Duncan gets around people the following day that Duncan is dead. Macbeth achieves his ambition of becoming king. He then goes on to kill Banquo because he had an arousing suspicion of him being the murderer of Duncan. Macbeth is tormented by Banquo’s ghost so he turns to the witches for guidance. Lady Macbeth goes mad and commits suicide leaving Macbeth drowned with sorrows because of his love for her. Macduff then slays Macbeth for the murder of Duncan and Malcolm is crowned king.

Macbeth deals with his feelings by killing King Duncan because of his ambition to be king and his admiration towards him. He is annoyed by the fact people are in a closer position to be king than himself so he goes around killing people who are either close in line to the throne or just have an arousing feeling that Macbeth committed the murders. The quote “A Borrower of the Night” means that the ghost of Banquo of whom Macbeth murdered will be back late and it will be dark, Banquo will come back to torment Macbeth and this makes him drive mad with hatred as well as fear. He deals with this by going to the witches for guidance. He killed Banquo first because Macbeth had an arousing suspicion that Banquo knew and would tell. When Macbeth went to visit the witches for the first time, the witches predicted that Banquo’s son would be the future King, this however deterred Macbeth’s wishes of being king, he decided to kill Banquo’s son but he fled before he had the chance.

Macbeth was introduced into the play as a brave soldier. A quote suggesting Macbeth was a brave soldier is “the captain tells Duncan about the bravery of Macbeth” Duncan sees in Macbeth that he has the potential to fight of an invasion even so; Duncan makes him Thane of Cawdor. He and his wife were determined to gain the titles ‘King and Queen’. Both of them think the way to succeeding in taking the current kings throne, is by killing King Duncan. Macbeth is now portrayed as a murderer. King Duncan has two sons Donalbain and Malcolm, Donalbain fled to Ireland, Malcolm is the rightful king but for then Macbeth was king for a while.

All the killings he has undertaken have kept a guilty conscience which has led him to a change. His wife was manipulating him into killing other people when he had his doubts on it. A major change in Macbeth was when his wife was hallucinating blood on he hands which drove her mad and eventually ended up committing suicide. Macbeth has a strong love bond for Lady Macbeth. A quote suggesting a guilty conscience is “O full of scorpions is my mind” all the killings has built up to a guilty conscience. In my opinion, Macbeth was an ambitious rogue who seeks power by treachery. The effect on the outcome of the play is King Duncan’s murder, Lady Macbeths Suicide and Macbeths slaying.

In conclusion, Macbeth is both a victim of external forces and some of his fate. The witches and his wife are both bad influences on him. Macbeth, Macduff and Banquo are alike because they have courage, strength, determination and dedicated in fighting, making those brave soldiers and they have good leadership and generosity. Although they have there differences which include Macduff and Banquo lacking heroic potency of a Shakespearean hero and Macbeth ends up as a tragic hero. Banquo and Macduff would have been boring heroes and so predictable whereas with Macbeth, you could never know what he was plotting. Out of the three, Macbeth is the one who makes a drastic change which is from good to evil.Essay help, just wee tips etc and if anything needs to be taking away etc, please help!! will be grateful!?
